N$50 000 up for grabs over the Coca Cola Regional Club Challenge Serie

The Coca Cola Regional Club Challenge Serie will start this weekend, with its first leg at Otjiwarongo on Saturday 23 February 2019. Athletes can claim a share of the grand prize of N$50 000, if they achieve performances that rank in the top 10 at the end of the serie, with performances that achieve at least a minimum of 1000 score on the IAAF Scoring Table, in any event. Athletes are expected to take part in all the three legs of the serie in order to be eligible to claim a share of the grand prize. Athletes from across the country are expected congregate at Otjiwarongo this Saturday to start the battle to claim a share of the grand prize.

Thomas Shighwedha and Tangi Mulundu crowned 2019 men and women National Cross Country Champions

Thomas Shighwedha of the NAMPOL Athletics Club and Tangi Malundu of the UNAM Athletics Club both from the Khomas Region, were crowned Snr men and Snr women 2019 National Cross Country Champions, respectively. Thomas was pushed throughout the race by Kefas Kondjashili exchanging the lead at various intervals. Jeremia Shaliaxue was third. The UNAM Athletics Club of the Khomas Region made a clean sweep of the medals in the Snr women 10km race with Tangi Mulundu and Theresia Nambambi and Kaurirongua Mungunda taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively. The event was made possible with the support of the Coca Cola, CENORED, and the Otjiwarongo Municipality.

Athletics Namibia vice president Johannes Shekutamba Mathew laid to rest at his home village

Vice president of Athletics Namibia, Mr Johannes Shekutamba Mathew was laid to rest at his home village of Okakekete village, Anamulenge consistency in Omusati Region on the 31 January 2019. Many from across the country went to pay their last respect. Among those that paid their homage were former Namibian sprinter Mr Frank Frederick, Athletics Namibia president Mr Erwin Naimhwaka, Deputy Minister of Finance Mr Natangwe Ithete, the Executive Chairperson of the National Youth Council of Namibia Mr Mandela Kepere, the Chief Administrative Officer of the Namibia Sport Commission Mr Freddy Mwiya, SWAPO Youth League Secretary Mr Ephraim Nekongo, athletes including some of the athletes that went through the tutorship of Mr Mathew such as Daniel Nghipandulwa, Sam Shimhanda and many others. Athletics Namibia vice president Johannes Shekutamba Mathew has died

It is with sadness that we learned of the passing of a dedicated cadre of the Athletics Namibia family, Mr Johannes Shekutamba Mathew, at the Oshakati State Hospital on the 24 January 2019.  Mr Mathew was vice president of Athletics Namibia, member the executive board and council of Athletics Namibia until his untimely death. He was very passionate about athletics and helping the youth and was fundamental in ensuring the Northern part of Namibia remained active in athletics. Athletics Namibia wishes Mr Mathew’s family and the athletics family strength and courage in this difficult moment. May his soul rest in iternal peace and his legacy to live on.

Three Namibian National Records tubble at the CAA-SR Championships in Harare

Ryan Williams set a new Namibian national record in the Discus for men at CAA-SR Senior Championships that took place in Harare from the 09 -10 June 2017. Ryan achieved a distance of 45.95m and improved on Hansie Booysen record of 45.74 that was set in 1991.  The men’s 4x400m as well as the women’s 4x100m also set new Namibian records at the Championships. The Namibian team of 23 athletes, generally had a good outing at the championships and brought home a total of 12 medals: 2 x gold medals; 1 x sliver medal; and 9 x bronze medals. Leena Ekandjo, Gold and Bronze in the women’s 5000m and 300m, respectively. Fred-Charles Pieterse, Gold in the men’s 110mh Roger Haitengi, Silver in men’s Triple Jump Tomas Reinhold, Bronze in the men’s 5000m Conette Smith, Bronzes in the women’s Shot put and Discus Ryam Williams, Bronze in the Discus men – new NR Bronze in women’s 4x100m relay- new NR Bronze in women’s 4x400m relay Bronze in men’s 4x400m relay – new NR Bronze in men’s 4x100m relay
