Team Namibia arrives in Harare for the CAA-SR Track&Field Championships

Namibian athletes will be up against their regional counterparts from Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe at the CAA Southern Region Track & Field Championships. The Championships takes place at the National Stadium in Harare, from the 10 – 11 June 2017.

2017 National Track & Field Champs a huge success

Athletes and the public delivered a memorable 2017 National Track & Field Champs. With the public coming in numbers, the stage was set for a special occasion. It was action from the word go, with Reinhold Thomas opening the stage with a dominant performance in the 10 000m men. The sprints provided electrifying performances with youth athlete Sade De Sousa giving a blistering performance in the 200m. In the 100m women’s final Sade pushed Jolene Jacobs who won only by 200th of a second in 11.82 seconds. In in the process Sade qualified for the World U/18 World Championships.  Dantago Gurirab also won a tightly contested 100m sprint final, beating Hitjirivue Kaanjuka and Even Tjiviju into second and third, respectively. Ernst Narib won a double in the 200m and 400m in a time of 20.93 and 46.54 seconds, respectively.

Marginalised Athletes at the Nationals

Athletics Namibia is happy to welcome athletes from marginalised communities at the National Track & Field Championships. As part of AN’s development program in corroboration with former athletes Kaura Kaura and Mao Tjiroze, five athletes from Opuwo will take part in the Nationals. They are: Kuariouje Hunga (5000m), Isaak Ndiambo (5000m), Mahindi Tjipuiko (5000m), Paseuatjo Mbendura (10000m), Turitjimue Zatjinda (1500m and 800m).

Ivan-Danny Geldenhuys first junior to qualify for the World U18 Championships

Ivan-Danny Geldenhuys of the Triomf Athletics Club from the Khomas Region, became the first junior athlete to qualify for the World U/18 Championships, which will take place from 12 – 16 July 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya.  The qualification period is open until the 26 June 2017 and more junior athletes still have the opportunity to qualify.
